50'Single-Door Boxcar. The PRR Class X45 refers to a specific class of 50-foot, welded-steel, single-door boxcars built for the PRR. Constructed at the railroad's Altoona shops in 1951 and 1952, these cars featured proprietary PRR designs, an inside length of 50'6", and 8-foot-wide door openings. Road Numbers assigned were 73000 thru 73499. These post-war cars were designed to meet the growing need for larger capacity and length and featured specific AAR (Association of American Railroads) standard dimensions for merchandise and auto-parts hauling. Following PRR's merger history, surviving X45 boxcars were absorbed into the Penn Central (PC) and later Conrail (CR) fleets. Many of these cars remained in service into the late 1970s and 1980s before being retired.
