40' 4 door Boxcar - the PRR CLASS X-31F box cars had a novel roof design named the "round roof" or "wagon top" or “Turtle roof”. By curving the roof sheets to meet the eave bar vertically (leaving a 4" inset on the edge) the cars had an inside height of 10'. The X-31's were used primarily to transport new automobiles or auto parts. Built beginning in 1934 by the Pennsylvania Railroad at its Altoona, Pennsylvania, shops and under contract by other builders. Pennsy operated thousands, and many also went to other railroads affiliated with PRR as well as those which purchased them used. They operated into the 1970s, and later in work train service.
