These cranes, PRR Class W120 ( 250-ton) often used for maintenance and wreck recovery, were a vital part of the PRR's operations. PRR coal fired steam cranes were used for various tasks including lifting heavy objects, track maintenance, and wreck recovery. PRR wreck cranes were designed to lift derailed locomotives and railcars, re-rail them, or load them onto flat cars for transport to repair facilities. A typical wreck crane included a heavy-duty flatcar supporting a boom, hoist machinery, an operator's cab, and a power source (initially steam, later diesel). To increase stability during lifting operations, wreck cranes often had outriggers that could be extended to provide a wider base.
