G29A series of "war emergency" composite gondolas, built in 1942. The US entered World War II, leading to restrictions on plate steel usage, which shifted the G29 series from all-steel to composite construction. These cars were built with an external steel frame and wood sheathing, a return to USRA-era construction techniques, but still with a modern welded underframe and deep side sheets designed to prevent sagging. The G29A series consisted of 500 cars with a 70-ton capacity. These gondolas featured thinner ends with simple rectangular corrugations and required wood lining inside for protection.
