Gondola
PRR #357625
This car was part of the G29A series of "war emergency" composite gondolas,
built in 1942. The US entered World War II, leading to restrictions on plate
steel usage, which shifted the G29 series from all-steel to composite
construction. The G29A cars were built with an external steel frame and wood
sheathing, a return to USRA-era construction techniques, but still with a modern
welded underframe and deep side sheets designed to prevent sagging. The G29A
series consisted of 500 cars with a 70-ton capacity. The G29A cars were numbered
in the series 357354-357853. These gondolas featured thinner ends with simple
rectangular corrugations and required wood lining inside for protection.
