Flat Car - Center Depressed
PRR #435493
52' Center-Depressed Flat Car - Center-Depressed flat cars were developed to handle
larger and taller loads. The depressed section made the loaded car have a lower
center and most were equipped with trucks with more than two axles to distribute
the extra weight. Between August and September 1927, the PRR built 10 riveted, depressed
center flats (435493-435502). Another 10 were built between July and September 1929
(470000-470009). Very similar to the F28, the cars were 52'6" long over strikers and
had a 20'0" by 8'0" loading deck. Riding on 3F-F2 six-wheel Buckeye trucks, the cars
had a capacity of 105-tons. The cars saw heavy use by Westinghouse for transport of
transformers and other electrical equipment.
