Flat Car
PRR #491311
52' Flat Car configured as a Maintenance of Way Wheel Carrier,
PRR Class FGR2. With the friction created from steel riding on steel,
wheels on locomotives and rolling stock periodically need to be replaced
for safety and smooth performance. When being delivered by rail, new
wheels are typically transported on flat cars that have been built or
modified for this specific purpose. Found from the 1950s through the
early 2000s, the prototypes of which were modified from earlier general-use flatcars.
