Passenger - Combination Car

PRR #492048

Although a designated Passenger - Combination Car - this specific car was used for "Maintenance of Way" or MOW services - it was heavy-weight baggage-combine passenger car used to support Wreck Train Support.  The Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) 250-ton steam cranes (often referred to as wreck derricks) were massive steam-powered machines used for heavy lifting, track maintenance, and clearing major derailments.  Due to their massive size, they were a crucial part of the PRR's "Wreck Trains".  Outfit or Bunk Cars were converted from obsolete passenger coaches (such as PRR PK-class wood or heavyweight steel cars) or boxcars.  They served as a mobile bunkhouse, a kitchen and stored supplies such as fuel, water and spare parts.
