Engine

PRR #9832B (Green)

The EMD F7B or "B" Unit originally stood for "booster" and this engine has no operator cab.  It's designed to be used in a set of engines.  Apart from the lack of an operating cab, the F7B is mechanically the same as an F7 in every other way.  Many EMD B units had hostler controls that allowed them to be moved around by themselves in a yard or engine facility.  The hostler either stuck his head out of one of the side portholes or the controls were mounted near a side door.  Some had an extra window cut in. A total of 1,483 F7B units were built.  The F7, including the B unit, was a key model in the transition from steam to diesel power, thanks to its reliability, efficiency, and power.  Its versatility allowed it to be used for both freight and passenger duties, and it became a common sight on many North American railroads.
